A Cosy Little DIY Idea Inspired by Dubrovnik Lavender

There is something especially lovely about bringing a little Mediterranean scent into the home, particularly on a slower afternoon. Inspired by the kind of fragrances so easily associated with Dubrovnik and the south, lavender, rosemary and orange, this simple DIY soap idea is an easy way to turn old soap scraps into something new, useful and beautifully scented.

It is the kind of small project that does not ask for much, only a little time, a few ingredients and the pleasure of making something with your hands.

What you will need

  • leftover soap scraps
  • soap colouring, if you want to add colour
  • silicone moulds or small cake moulds
  • a heatproof bowl
  • a pot of hot water
  • dried lavender, rosemary or flower petals
  • a sharp knife
  • a teaspoon
  • a wooden stick
  • a few drops of essential oil, such as lavender, rosemary, orange or lemon

Melt the soap gently

Cut the leftover soap into small pieces and place them in a heatproof bowl. Set the bowl over a pot of hot water so the soap melts slowly and gently. Stir with a wooden stick until the mixture becomes smooth and even.

Add scent and colour

Once the soap has melted, you can add a few drops of essential oil. Lavender gives it a soft, calming note, rosemary feels fresher and more herbal, while orange adds a brighter, sunnier scent. If you want a touch of colour, add a few drops of soap colouring at this stage too.

Pour into moulds

Pour the mixture into your moulds while it is still warm. If you want a more playful effect, add colour directly into the moulds and swirl it lightly as you pour.

Finish with a Mediterranean touch

Before the soap hardens, add a few dried lavender flowers, rosemary leaves or petals on top. It gives the bars a more natural, decorative look and makes the whole thing feel a little more special.

Leave to cool

Let the soaps cool completely. If you want to speed things up, place them in the fridge for a while. Once they are firm, remove them from the moulds and they are ready to use.

A small, scented reminder of the south
What makes this little DIY idea so appealing is its simplicity. It is easy, practical and gently creative, but it also brings something of the Mediterranean indoors — the scent of lavender, the freshness of rosemary, the brightness of orange. Small things, perhaps, but sometimes exactly the ones that make home feel warmer, calmer and a little more beautiful.
