Entering the Most Beautiful Time of the Year: The First Advent Candle Has Been Lit

For some time now, our city has been dressing up in holiday attire, celebrating the most beautiful time of the year despite the unusual circumstances. To the delight of the children, ‘Medo’ (The Bear) arrived on Stradun, and the decorated, large Christmas trees were placed traditionally near the church of St. Blaise and the Cathedral. Next to the Rector’s Palace, a Christmas Advent wreath was placed making everything ready for lighting the first Advent candle that has been lit this Saturday night by Dubrovnik Mayor Mato Franković.

At the same time, the holiday lighting was turned on throughout the City, officially leading us into the best part of the year and the start of the Dubrovnik Winter Festival. This year’s Advent begun with the prayer, led by the cathedral pastor Don Marin Lučić.

“We want all of us to stay healthy, especially our senior citizens. Take care of them, keep social distance. This will be an unusual Advent, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve, yes. But it shall also pass, and we will move on. The most important thing is to stay healthy,” Mayor Franković emphasized.
