When visiting Dubrovnik it’s easy to become so enchanted by the Old Town and beautiful beaches that you miss out on the wonderful surroundings of the historic city. If you can tear yourself away from the stone walls and sun soaked beaches then a day trip to either Pelješac or Konavle is strongly recommended. Visiting these areas will give any visitor the chance to experience the real Croatia: full of history, rich in culture and home of delicious local food and wine.
Pelješac Wine Tour
This unique wine tour takes you to the beautiful Pelješac peninsula located in the heart of South Dalmatia. This picturesque area is home to some of the most intriguing red wines in Europe. Florio Car’s private wine tour includes a trio of wine-tasting opportunities at Croatia’s most respected wine cellars, field visits to their vineyards on the slopes of this magnificent peninsula and a magnificent Dalmatian lunch Bota Sare restaurant in Mali Ston. Your driver is your personal guide throughout the day taking you firstly to the Matuško winery, where you will get a chance to taste red and white wines including the renowned Dingač, made of 100% Plavac Mali grapes.
A visit to the Grgic winery in Trstenik follows, owned by Miljenko Grgic who studied wine-making in Zagreb, the winery overlooks the charming Trstenik harbour. After emigrating to the US, with only $20 in his pocket, Grgic founded the famous Grgich Hills winery in Napa Valley. In the cellars you will taste their famous white Pošip and their red Plavac Mali Dingač. Our final lunch time will be to the Mali Ston at Bota Šare where you can taste best fish food and have the opportunity to taste oysters. All accompanied by wines from Pelješac.
Cavtat and Konavle
Only minutes south of Dubrovnik is the ancient Roman settlement of Cavtat and the rolling Konavle valley-the very southernmost parts of Croatia before the rugged coastline and mountainous terrain of Montenegro. Combining Cavtat and Konavle makes for a wonderful day tour that takes you from a historic seaside village into the hidden interior of southernmost Croatia. Cavtat’s past, present and future are very closely tied to Dubrovnik’s and this historically rich area is a delight. Its Old Town is a warren of narrow streets and cobbled alleys and its serpentine waterfront promenade that frames a picturesque harbour is simply charming.
After visiting Cavtat, you will continue further inland to Konavle. Framed by the southern mountains of Herzegovina and Montenegro, its small population lives in some 32 picturesque villages scattered across the south-easterly tip of Croatia. What makes Konavle so intriguing is how its folk traditions and way of life have remained so intact. As part of your trip you will have the opportunity to experience a signature culinary dish in an authentic village konoba deep in a hillside – the finest lamb slowly roasted under a thick iron pan covered in hot coals, yours to savour with a glass of delicious local wine!
