Wine growing in Croatia has boomed in the past decade, ranking 30th in 2010 on a list of producers at 50,000 tonnes. With a history dating back some 2,500 years to the Greek settlers who planted vines on the Dalmatian islands of Vis, Hvar and Korčula, Croatia has gained a reputation for producing high quality wines such as Plavac mali, Dingač and Graševina.
A recent article in the British Daily Mail newspaper has sung the praises of Croatian white wines currently on sale in Marks & Spencers, “There are some gems that taste utterly unique and offer a style of fragrant refreshment somewhere between the fresh whites of Italy and the aromatic wines of Alsace.”
Wine expert Olly Smith recommends pairing the wines with shellfish, “…thanks to their breezy, fragrant character and purity of zing.”
