A hundred babies born in Croatia last year were given a short, simple, and unique name – Maro, proving that the popularity of this name extends beyond the borders of Dubrovnik and its surroundings.
Maro is a shortened version of the name Maroje. There are two theories about the origin of the name. The first suggests that it comes from the Hebrew word “mayam,” while the second proposes that it derives from the Egyptian “mry-ima,” meaning “beloved by the god Amon.”
The name gained fame through our renowned writer Marin Držić in his well-known comedy play, Dundo Maroje.
