Midsummer Scene Presents: The Most Thrilling Edition of Festival Yet!

The ninth edition of Midsummer Scene, the only Croatian theatre festival in English, promises to be the most vibrant to date. It will kick off on June 22nd with the world premiere of “Around the World in 80 Days,” the festival’s first-ever musical based on Jules Verne’s famous novel. Directed by Sean Aite and composed by Leo Elso, this exhilarating musical will grace the stage of the historic Lovrjenac Fortress for thirteen performances, offering an unforgettable experience for theatre enthusiasts.

In addition to the musical the Lovrjenac Fortress will also witness a spectacular finale to this year’s festival. On July 6th, Goran Karan will present the premiere of his solo musical “Love is Fair” (Stories from My Street), a performance that promises to leave no one indifferent.

For classical music enthusiasts, a special treat awaits with the “Piano Maniacs Triathlon” concert, featuring three world-renowned pianists: Matej Meštrović, Matthew Mayer, and Antonija Pacek. The concert will take place on June 30th at the Rector’s Palace. Moreover, the festival will present the English translation of Marin Držić’s play “The Novella of Stanac” in collaboration with the Marin Držić House on July 7th in a special event held at the Sponza Palace.

“The upcoming edition of the Midsummer Scene festival promises to be the richest one yet. We are already witnessing great interest, with tickets being sold worldwide. Expect a top-notch summer experience at the Lovrjenac Fortress, featuring joyful songs, live music, outstanding performances, and video projections. Even during the initial rehearsals, it was evident that the entire ensemble is truly enjoying themselves. They will soon arrive in the city, and I believe we are in for an unforgettable start to summer with this year’s Midsummer Scene!” stated the festival’s executive producer, Darija Mikulandra Žanetić.

Leo Elso, an actor and composer who recently performed in the musical “The Grinning Man” in London’s West End, composed the music for the musical. Leo also takes on the role of Passapartout, Julian Barros portrays Miss Aouda, Rhianna Goodwin embodies Samantha Graham and Batuclar, Julian Harries portrays Mr. Fix, while Croatian actor and creative producer of the festival, Filip Krenus, assumes the role of Mr. Fogg. The costume and set designer, Roberto Surace, hails from the Broadway stage, Aleksandar Saša Mondecar is the lighting designer, and Nikola Kapidžić is responsible for video projections.

“Together, from the Lovrjenac Fortress, we will embark on a daring journey around the world in the company of Mr. Phileas Fogg and his servant, Passpartout. The world premiere of the newly adapted musical version of Jules Verne’s classic novel promises an abundance of entertainment, romance, and adventure. Expect a generous dose of slapstick, can-can dancers, hot air balloon rides, a train accident, elephants, and infectious melodies!” announced producer Jelena Maržić.
