PELJESAC BRIDGE COMPLETED: After 303 Years the Croatian Territory is Finally United

The Peljesac Bridge, a long-awaited dream of all the inhabitants of southern Croatia, has finally become a reality. By placing the last 165th segment of the steel span structure, 18 meters long and weighing 220 tons, the largest strategic project in the Croatian south has finally been realized thereby connecting our County with the rest of Croatia after more than three centuries of separation.

People from all parts of the County came to witness the connection between Komarna and Brijesta. The Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and almost the entire Government attended the central celebration, with the Chinese, who were the bearers of this project, organizing spectacular fireworks.

The organization of work had flown flawlessly. The first pilot was installed by China Bridge and Road Company in cooperation with Croatian Roads in January of 2019, and today we got to see the final merge. The director of Croatian roads, Josip Škorić, said that there is still work to be done on the construction of the asphalt structure, equipping the bridge and public lighting, which will hopefully be done till the end of January 2022.

In order to save themselves from the inevitable invasion of the Venetians, 303 years ago the Republic of Dubrovnik sold a part of its territory to the Ottoman Empire in hopes that a physical gap, filled with the mighty Turkish Empire, will save them from their archenemy. New centuries brought new wars, new treaties, and the creation of new states, but the separate territory of Dubrovnik always sought to merge with the mother country. Today we finally welcomed that day. What Dubrovnik diplomacy did to protect us then, we thank them today as Croatian territory finally becomes whole.
