Today, City of Dubrovnik marked one special event – World Tourism Day. This year’s theme is ‘Tourism and Accessibility’ by UNWTO.
Programme started with the a capella Subrenum group, champagne, cake and congratulation by mayor Andro Vlahušić. Tonight at 7 pm Dubrovnik will receive an award by ‘Večernji list’, national newspaper, which declared our city as a ‘Tourism Champion’. Later, Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra will perform an repertoire with the classical and evergreen music together with the Gadjo Manouche band.
World Tourism Day was specially marked in Dubrovnik celebrating one important number – three million overnight stays in our town, made 20 days earlier than in 2015.
This year’s World Tourism Day theme is dedicated to accessibility in tourism or – tourism for everybody. It highlights the need for tourism accessibility, spreading the message about the importance and benefits of universal accessibility in society today.
World Tourism Organization estimates that fifteen percent of the world’s population lives with some form of disability. The numbers say: billion people who may not be able to enjoy the privileges of learning about other cultures, natural beauty, or have a simple excitement about the trip and vacation.
The city of Dubrovnik and the Dubrovnik Tourist Board organized a demonstration of the conveyor from Multiple Sclerosis Society, which allows entry to the monumental buildings in a wheelchair. Also, a map for the blind, made by Dubrovnik Lions Club and Dubrovnik high school students created in Braille in 2012, was presented today.
A brief interpretation tours in sign language, in collaboration with the Dubrovnik Guides and translator for a sign language Ana Liban, was also held in the Old Town.
