Romeo And Juliet @ Dubrovnik Summer Festival

Watching an open air ballet performance isn’t an opportunity that comes around too often, so when it does be sure to make the most of it!

The Slovenian National Theatre of Maribor brings its acclaimed production of S. Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet to Ruder Boskovic Square tonight as part of the Dubrovnik Summer Festival.

Preserving the most important parts of the eponymous Shakespearean tragedy and one of the most beautiful stories of world literature, the classical ballet by Sergei Prokofiev tells the tragic story of  lovers in Verona from warring families: the Montecchi and Capuleti. Unlike many classical ballet performances this production deals with people and their relationships, not with characters from fantasy. The story talks about the passion of the people, their love but also chaos and death.

Ballet dancer and choreographer Valentina Turcu is one of the most creative dance artists in Slovenia,  trained under the supervision of the renowned Maurice Bejart. Choreography for the ballet received the critical acclaim, notably from Dance Europe, “The production is packed with fine dance and the energy and passion generated by the performers left an audience exhausted and exhilarated.” – Maggie Foyer, Dance Europe, Jan 2013
