The slower way up Srđ: a scenic walk above Dubrovnik

Walk up to the top of Srđ along its winding serpentine road — or simply serpentine, as it is called in Croatian

If you enjoy walking and do not mind a gentle uphill climb, one of Dubrovnik’s most rewarding outings is the walk up to the top of Srđ along its winding serpentine road — or simply serpentine, as it is called in Croatian. Rising above the city, Srđ reaches about 412 metres above sea level, while the upper cable car station sits at 405 metres and opens onto some of the finest panoramic views in Dubrovnik. From the top, the city unfolds beautifully from above, with views stretching across the Old Town, Lokrum, the parts of Dubrovnik beyond the walls and the Elaphiti Islands.

A few things to keep in mind before you start

The walk up Srđ is not difficult in any extreme sense, but it does help to have at least a little stamina. If you are not especially someone who enjoys long walks, that does not have to be a problem — you will probably just take more frequent breaks, and along this route that often feels natural anyway, especially when the views invite you to stop for photos.

It is also worth preparing properly. Good sports shoes or comfortable trainers make a real difference on the way up, as do light clothes, sunscreen and a hat. And if the weather is hot, a bottle of water is essential.

A beautiful walk with the city opening below you

There are easier ways to get to the top of Srđ. You can take the cable car, and you can also drive up by car. But we chose to walk, following the serpentine bends that gradually climb above Dubrovnik and reveal more of the view with every turn.

That is exactly what makes this walk so special. It is not just about reaching the summit, but about watching the city slowly open below you. As you climb, the perspective keeps changing — first the rooftops, then the walls, then Lokrum, and then the wider coastline and island horizon. By the time you reach the top, Dubrovnik feels both closer and wider at once. The panoramic character of Srđ is also emphasised by official cable car materials, which describe it as one of the best viewpoints over Dubrovnik and the surrounding area.

Srd Walk 7

More than just a view at the top

Once you reach the top, Srđ offers more than just a place to stop for photos. You can sit down for a coffee, enjoy something to eat and take in the view properly, with Dubrovnik spread out below you in a way that feels calmer and more spacious than anywhere in the city itself.

There is also the Homeland War Museum at the top, for those who want to add a cultural stop to the outing. But even without that, Srđ is the kind of place where it is worth staying a little longer, simply for the view, the pause and the feeling of seeing Dubrovnik from above.

Srd Walk 9

The kind of walk that rewards every step

Some outings are really about the destination. This one is about both the destination and the way up. The steady rhythm of the serpentine climb, the changing angle of the city and the moment when the full panorama finally opens all make this one of Dubrovnik’s most satisfying walks.

It is, quite simply, a beautiful route. And the photographs speak for themselves.
