Dubrovnik may be one of Croatia’s most iconic summer destinations, but for visitors who wish to discover more of the country, Zagreb offers a very different kind of experience.
The Croatian capital is often seen as a practical stop along the way, a place for a flight connection, a short stay before heading to the coast, or a city break before returning home. Yet in summer, Zagreb reveals a softer and more atmospheric side of itself, especially when music fills its parks and squares.
One of the most beautiful reasons to visit this season is Zagreb Classic, one of the city’s most recognisable open-air cultural events. From 19 June to 3 July, King Tomislav Square will once again become a grand stage beneath the summer sky, offering visitors a chance to experience classical music in the very heart of the city.
Music Under the Stars
What makes Zagreb Classic special is not only its impressive programme, but also the way the audience experiences it.
Instead of concert halls and formal settings, music comes out into the open, among the people. On the lawn in front of the Art Pavilion, visitors can see families with children, couples, tourists who happened upon the concert by chance, and Zagreb locals who have been returning to the festival year after year.
They all share the same space and the same experience: outstanding music beneath the summer sky.
Nine Concert Evenings
This year’s programme brings nine concert evenings, designed both for classical music lovers and for those who are only just discovering it.
The stage will welcome acclaimed international artists such as Ramin Bahrami, Richard Galliano, Liya Petrova, Erin Morley and Lawrence Brownlee, alongside leading Croatian musical institutions including the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra, the Croatian Radiotelevision Symphony Orchestra and the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb.
A special place in the programme is reserved for World Music Day on 21 June, when the city will be further filled with music through events intended for all generations, including the youngest visitors.
For the first time, Zagreb Classic will also briefly move to the Music Pavilion on Zrinjevac, with a performance by Italy’s Playtoy Orchestra.
Free Admission for All Programmes
Admission to all Zagreb Classic events is free, making the festival a rare and valuable opportunity to experience top-level art in a relaxed and spontaneous way.
No tickets, no formalities — just arrive, find your place on the grass and let the evening unfold.
For visitors discovering Croatia beyond the coast, Zagreb Classic offers a different kind of summer memory. It is a chance to experience the capital at its most open and atmospheric: through music, warm evenings and one of the city’s most beautiful public squares.
So, if your journey through Croatia takes you to Zagreb this summer, this may be one evening not to overplan.
Just come. And perhaps stay a little longer than you thought you would.
