Croatia Celebrates Statehood Day

Croatia is celebrating Statehood Day today, one of the most important dates in the country’s modern history.

Observed every year on 30 May, Statehood Day honours the constitution of the first democratically elected multi-party Croatian Parliament in 1990. The date is remembered as a turning point in Croatia’s political and democratic development, opening the path towards independence, sovereignty and the creation of a modern Croatian state.

A Date of Special Importance

For many Croatians, 30 May carries strong historical and emotional meaning. It recalls the beginning of a new political era after decades of one-party rule and stands as a symbol of freedom, democracy and the right of the Croatian people to decide their own future.

It is also a day to remember all those who contributed to the creation and defence of an independent Croatia, as well as to reflect on the values on which the country was built.

Returned to 30 May

Statehood Day was originally marked on 30 May until 2001. From 2001 until 2020, the same date was observed as Croatian Parliament Day, while Statehood Day was celebrated on another date. Following changes to the Croatian law on holidays, 30 May once again became the official Statehood Day of the Republic of Croatia from 2020.

Across the country, the day is marked with official ceremonies, Croatian flags and messages of gratitude, pride and unity.

From Dubrovnik to Zagreb and across all parts of Croatia, today is a day of remembrance, respect and celebration.

Happy Statehood Day to Croatia and all Croatians!
