Midsummer Scene Opens at Lovrjenac with a New Musketeer Adventure

Fort Lovrjenac will once again become one of Dubrovnik’s most atmospheric summer stages as Midsummer Scene opens its twelfth season with a brand-new production inspired by Alexandre Dumas’ legendary Musketeers.

From 24 June to 5 July, the festival returns with One for All – A Three Musketeers Tale, an open-air theatre production performed in English. The play will be staged at 9:30 p.m. every evening except 30 June, bringing international theatre back beneath the stone walls of Lovrjenac.

This year’s opening production continues what Midsummer Scene has made its signature: a classic story reimagined for Dubrovnik, an international ensemble, English-language theatre and a setting that gives every performance a sense of place that is difficult to recreate anywhere else.

D’Artagnan, Memory and Theatre

In One for All – A Three Musketeers Tale, the famous adventure is told from the perspective of an ageing D’Artagnan. By a twist of fate, he finds himself imprisoned with a troupe of failed actors and begins to recreate the past — the moment when he first met Athos, Porthos and Aramis.

What follows is not simply a retelling of Dumas’ classic, but a playful theatrical adventure built from memory, imagination, comedy and movement. Swordplay, improvisation, music and fast ensemble storytelling turn the world of the Musketeers into a celebration of theatre itself — a story about friendship, courage and the power of performance to bring entire worlds to life.

The play was written by Filip Krenus, co-founder of Midsummer Scene, and directed by British director Sean Aita, who returns to Dubrovnik for his sixth season at the fortress and his fourth production for the festival.

An International Cast at Lovrjenac

The 2026 festival ensemble brings together Stephen Louis, Lucas Albion, Nick Howard-Brown, Jessica Spalis and Lucinda Davidson, with an international creative team behind the production.

Together, they continue the festival’s recognisable style: actor-driven, energetic and imaginative theatre, shaped especially for the open-air space of Lovrjenac. In this setting, the story of the Musketeers becomes more than a literary adventure. It becomes living theatre — fast, witty and full of movement, with Dubrovnik’s historic backdrop playing its own quiet role in the performance.

More Stories, More Dubrovnik

Alongside the main production, this year’s Midsummer Scene programme also brings two additional events that connect theatre, literature and Dubrovnik’s cultural heritage.

On 25 June at 8 p.m., Sponza Palace will host the presentation of the first English translation of Marin Držić’s Grižula, also known as Plakir. Translated by Filip Krenus and published by the House of Marin Držić, the work brings one of Dubrovnik’s great literary voices closer to international audiences.

On 30 June at 9:30 p.m., the programme continues at Slanica / Revelin with A Wizard in the Cave, a solo performance inspired by the life of Marin Getaldić. Written by Filip Krenus, directed by Paul Anthony Morris and performed by Thomas Michaelson, the piece is part of the programme marking the 400th anniversary of the death of Dubrovnik’s great mathematician, physicist and thinker.

Dubrovnik as a Summer Theatre

After its Dubrovnik run, One for All – A Three Musketeers Tale will travel to Hvar, where it will be performed on 7 and 8 July at the historic Hvar Theatre, as part of the celebration of the 65th anniversary of the Hvar Summer Festival.

Still, Lovrjenac remains the heart of the story. For twelve seasons, Midsummer Scene has connected Dubrovnik’s open-air theatre tradition with international productions and audiences from around the world. Its formula remains simple, but powerful: a strong story, a historic stage, performances in English and the feeling that the city itself is part of the play.

This summer, the Musketeers return to Dubrovnik not only as characters from a classic adventure, but as a new theatrical experience made for Lovrjenac.

Tickets are priced at 30, 40 and 50 euros and are available online through ulaznice.hr, as well as at the box office at Fort Lovrjenac one hour before each performance.
