It’s the time of delicious and fragrant medlars that remind us from numerous gardens in Dubrovnik that summer is approaching.
Once, this fruit was a favorite alongside quinces, mulberries, and other tasty fruits that our ancestors had the pleasure of enjoying. Medlar is not an indigenous variety in the Dubrovnik area, but it has long become “domesticated.” It was brought, in fact, by sailors from China and Japan many centuries ago. Its fruits are refreshing, sweet, and juicy.
This fruit is a popular choice for crafting liqueurs in our region, and it can also be turned into delicious marmalades, refreshing juices, and flavorful syrups.
