April is one of the best months to explore Dubrovnik on foot. The weather is usually mild, the city is greener, and the peak summer crowds have not yet taken over the streets and viewpoints. It is the time of year when walking feels less like a survival test and more like the perfect way to experience the city. Official visitor information also points to easy seaside promenades, Old Town walks and the Sveti Jakov area as enjoyable options outside the hottest part of the year.
1. Old Town early-morning stroll
There is no better way to begin an April day in Dubrovnik than with a quiet walk through the Old Town before it fully wakes up. Start at Pile Gate, wander along Stradun, then slip into the side streets, stairways and small squares while everything still feels calm. In spring, this is when the city is at its most photogenic: soft light, polished stone and far fewer people in the frame.
2. The City Walls
If you want the classic Dubrovnik walk, this is it. The City Walls stretch for about 1,940 metres and include towers, fortresses and sweeping views over the terracotta roofs and the Adriatic. They are open every day of the year except Christmas Day, making them a reliable spring choice, and April is far more comfortable for this exposed walk than the height of summer. 3. Pile to Gradac Park
For a shorter and more relaxed route, walk from the Old Town towards Gradac Park. This is a lovely choice for visitors who want sea views without committing to a long hike. The area above Pile offers a quieter side of Dubrovnik, with shaded corners and open views back towards the city and the coastline. It works especially well in April, when the weather is pleasant enough to stop, sit and simply enjoy the view.
4. Ploče to Sveti Jakov
If you are staying near Ploče or simply want a walk with one of Dubrovnik’s most beautiful coastal perspectives, head east towards Sveti Jakov. Older Dubrovnik visitor materials specifically recommend this area for an easy walk or morning jog, and it remains one of the city’s most rewarding spring routes. The combination of pine trees, sea views and a more residential atmosphere makes it feel calmer than the Old Town, while still being close to it.
5. Lokrum Island paths
For a half-day walking escape, Lokrum is hard to beat. The island is a protected reserve covered largely by forest vegetation and has long been one of Dubrovnik’s favourite natural getaways. Its official visitor information confirms it is open again for the 2026 season, with ticketing information already available for April, making it a very practical spring outing. In April, Lokrum feels especially appealing: green, peaceful and far less intense than in midsummer.
6. Walk up towards the Cable Car station and Srđ views
Even if you do not go all the way up the hill on foot, the area around the lower cable car station makes for a good uphill walk from the Old Town. The cable car’s official information notes that the lower station is reachable on foot from Pile or Ploče in roughly 8 to 12 minutes, and the top of Srđ remains one of Dubrovnik’s signature panoramic points. On clear days, the views from above are among the best in the city.
7. Lapad seaside promenade
If you want an easier, flatter route away from the Old Town, Lapad is ideal. Official Dubrovnik visitor material describes Lapad as a green city district with beaches, hotels and walking paths, and specifically highlights its seaside promenades. In April, it is a great place for a sunset walk, a morning coffee stop or an easy stretch of sea air without the intensity of the historic centre.
A few April walking tips
April is much kinder than July or August, but comfortable shoes are still essential in Dubrovnik. The stone streets can be slippery, the staircases are real, and even easy routes often involve more climbing than visitors expect. For exposed walks such as the City Walls, morning or late afternoon remains the best choice. Lokrum and Lapad are better for slower, greener walks, while the Old Town and the walls are perfect when you want the classic Dubrovnik experience.
